Tonight was our last night in Perrysburg. We got all our things situated and packed. Boxes and taken apart furniture now lay scattered around the apartment like the guts of a piñata that had recently been destroyed by Barry Bonds.
The night was warm and clear so we took out our bikes for one last ride through town once the packing was done. The orange hues of dusk blanketed the Maumee River in a shade of soft gold. We rode up to Fort Meigs and walked around the historic grounds. Canons and old wooden houses lay spread out amidst a fence of wooden pillars high enough to hold back an army. We walked with the ghosts and the gentle breeze as we pushed our bikes along the gravel path.
On the return we stopped for a final caramel sundae at Oh Deer Diner (Carolyn’s favorite!). We sat and ate our ice cream as cars passed by on Louisiana avenue. We reflected on our time in Perrysburg and concluded it was a great little town to have lived in. We’ll miss the pizza at 5th street Pub and of course the ice cream, by we’ll miss the sun setting over the gently rolling Maumee River more.
