I spent the majority of the day yesterday taking my bicycle apart and trying to fit it in a bike box. It is mostly a frustrating activity to do, and one that isn’t particularly enjoyable or enlightening. It isn’t an exact science yet you need to have some idea about how it works. Luckily there is the internet and YouTube and both offer words of wisdom and encouragement to those who quite frankly don’t know what the f*** they are doing (like myself).
Like with any foreign endeavor, there are learning curves and in some cases re-learning curves and in many instances mistakes and fumbling and curse-words and punching cardboard boxes out of frustration. But luckily all those things were exhausted a week and a half ago when we ventured to put Carolyn’s bike in a box – and it turned out pretty good, despite some hiccups.
So this time, with expert knowledge now engraved in my tiny brain and the big mistakes mostly out of the way, it was actually a more pleasurable experience. Now, it’s not something I’d like to do everyday, don’t get me wrong, but it wasn’t SO bad. The universe didn’t explode. I didn’t punch or kick anything. And at the end of it all, my bike was in a box, protected under a nice layer of lime-green plastic bubble wrap and un-recyclable foam pipe insulation, ready to be shipped out by FedEx to a small bike shop by the Atlantic Coast in St. Augustine Florida, to sit and wait by the navy blue sea until I arrive to pick it up.
Below are some pictures of the first snowfall at Pinckney State Rec Area, near Dexter, MI. It was a really pretty day, but I’d be lying if I said I’m not looking forward to 70 degree sunny days and palm trees right about now…
